Is Deodorant Bad For You?

Believe it or not, sweat alone does not have an odor.  Body odor is caused by the interaction of sweat and bacteria.

Deodorant is designed to reduce bacteria that interacts with sweat.  This is how deodorant fights odor.

Unfortunately, ingredients like aluminum are used in deodorants because it can block the sweat glands. (Source)

Fragrances are used to counteract any body odor that does occur.  However, fragrance is a general term that can be any one of hundreds of harmful ingredients.

Why Use Non Toxic Deodorant?

Within 26 second of applying a product to the skin, 60% is absorbed into the skin and then into the blood stream.

There are at least 20 lymph nodes in the armpit. Applying toxic deodorant chemicals over the armpits means these ingredients have direct access to absorbing into the lymphatic system and are more prone to affecting breast tissue.

Deodorant has the ability to clog your pores in your armpit.  These ingredients can also build up in the pores of your armpit area.

I was told by one of my followers that she went to her OB/GYN because she was concerned about a lump in the armpit area.  It actually turned out to be built up deodorant!!

Swapping out your deodorant will eliminate these toxins from being absorbed into your body on a daily basis.

In addition to eliminating toxins, non toxic deodorant may also include soothing ingredients to nourish the skin and some may even help detox from previously used chemical deodorants!

What’s the Difference Between Deodorant and Antiperspirant?

Deodorant reduces the bacteria that interacts with sweat to produce body odor.

Antiperspirant blocks sweat glands to reduce sweating from occurring in the first place.

Mainstream deodorants can also target the blockage of sweat glands, giving them antiperspirant properties.

What is the Safest Deodorant to use?

Conventional deodorants contain ingredients that are dangerous for our health.  The safest deodorant to use is one that does not include these toxic ingredients.

What Ingredients to Avoid in Deodorant

Here are the ingredients we need to avoid when looking for a safe deodorant:

  • Triclosan: anti-bacterial, endocrine disruptor, reproductive & developmental defects, increased risk of liver tumors, increased risk of allergies & asthma, production leads to by-products that are potentially more toxic than triclosan itself
  • Propylene glycol: Penetration enhancer, strong irritant and contact allergen, cytotoxic (toxic to cells), potential to damage DNA
  • Diethanolamine – carcinogen, skin irritant, reproductive & developmental toxin
  • Parabens – linked to birth defects, endocrine disruptor
  • Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) – endocrine disruptor & carcinogen
  • Phenoxyethanol – is an allergen, harmful to infants, contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which is a known carcinogen
  • Aluminum – linked to breast and prostate cancer

Baking Soda Vs Non Baking Soda Deodorant

Baking soda is often used in deodorants for its odor-fighting properties.  While baking soda is not a toxic, it can irritate sensitive skin.

In the following recommendations, I point out which deodorants include baking soda and which do not.
