Baby laundry detergents are usually made with specific ingredients that promise to clean tough stains and leave behind a gentle scent. Unfortunately, many of the ingredients usied to achieve this are harmful to our health – and even more so to a brand new baby.
Laundry detergents often include ingredients such as sodium borate, laureth-7, formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate, methylisothiazolinone, sodium laureth sulfate, and more.
These ingredients can cause damage to the endocrine and reproductive systems, birth defects, cause allergies and asthma, and are even linked to cancer!
Take a look at one of the most well known baby laundry detergents, Dreft:
These ingredients are even more concerning for a baby. Our skin absorbs about 60% of what we put on it and laundry detergent is designed to stay on our clothing long after they are removed from the washing machine – especially if they include scent boosting fragrances. There’s no reason a baby should need to be exposed to these harmful chemical ingredients.
And since babies spend a lot of time sleeping, it’s important that these ingredients aren’t left on sheets and bedding as an additional source of exposure.
Fortunately, we have a great variety of non toxic baby laundry detergents to choose from to help keep baby safe.
Is baby safe laundry detergent necessary?

- Must be void of toxic ingredients. Topically applied products absorb into our skin within 26 seconds. From there, they enter the bloodstream and can begin to accumulate within the body. Toxic chemical ingredients can cause anything from skin irritation to hormone imbalances. Some ingredients are even classified as carcinogenic (known to cause cancer.)
