Babies go through an estimated 8,000 diapers from birth to potty training. The average baby diaper can include materials and ingredients that are linked to health risks for your baby. Using a non toxic diaper can help eliminate your baby’s exposure to everyday toxins.

INGREDIENTS AND MATERIALS TO AVOID IN DIAPERS
- Phthalates: plasticizers responsible for endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive system damage, as well as kidney & liver risks.
- Chlorine/chlorine dioxide: can be contaminated with dioxins as a byproduct during manufacturing. TCF (total chlorine-free) are not bleached with a chlorine derivative, while ECF (elemental chlorine-free) diapers are bleached with a chlorine derived chemical. Opt for TCF diapers if possible.
- Fragrance: endocrine disruptors, cover term for other toxic chemicals that include phthalates, which are linked to ADHD, organ toxicity, reproductive toxicity
- Polypropylene & polyethylene: derived from petroleum, linked to endocrine disruption and can be harmful to the reproductive system. These materials are often included in the top sheet that touches baby’s skin.
CRITERIA
While no diaper is perfect, we can still choose a safer diaper based on certain criteria. For this post we’ll be using the following criteria to rate diapers:
BEST: TCF, top sheet is petroleum-free, fragrance and phthalate-free.
OKAY: TCF, top sheet contains materials derived from petroleum such as polyethylene or polypropylene, fragrance & phthalate-free.
AVOID: ECF, top sheet contains materials derived from petroleum such as polyethylene or polypropylene, and contains phthalates or does not disclose.
It is important to note that many diapers will include plastic components, however, the top sheet is what makes direct contact with baby’s skin. Since our skin is capable of absorbing these ingredients through the skin, we want to be sure the top sheet is free of petroleum-derived ingredients.
SELECTING THE RIGHT DIAPER
While we want to strive for the least amount of toxins possible, remember that it is likely impossible to use non toxic products for every single item you own and use. Selecting from the “okay” list may be more affordable and/or accessible and thats okay! Make the choice that makes the most sense for you and your baby and leave it at that.
