Eye makeup remover is now available in various forms, from wipes to waters. While convenient, many of these mainstream products contain chemical ingredients that are not necessary to the removal of makeup. We end up being unnecessarily exposed to ingredients that are harmful to our health.
Ingredients like fragrances, propylparaben, and phenoxyethanol are linked to endocrine disruption, allergies, irritation of the skin, eyes, and lungs, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and more. These are completely unnecessary risks because there are safer options out there!
- I like to stick with organic products as much as possible.
- It MUST be affordable – this is non-negotiable in my book. Remember to always look at the cost per ounce or per unit, and not the overall price. This will tell you how affordable each option truly is.
- Must be void of toxic ingredients. Topically applied products absorb into our skin within 26 seconds. From there, they enter the bloodstream and can begin to accumulate within the body. Toxic chemical ingredients can cause anything from skin irritation to hormone imbalances. Some ingredients are even classified as carcinogenic (known to cause cancer.)
- It needs to be non-comedogenic. This means it will not clog your pores. Coconut oil-based products have a tendency to do this, which is why none are included on my list below.
The following options are natural products that can be used to remove eye makeup, as well as facial makeup. Not only are they void of chemical ingredients, but they are also incredibly moisturizing and beneficial to the skin. Win-win!
My top non toxic makeup removers may surprise you….they’re actually oils!! And you probably have at least one of them sitting in your kitchen right now!
Which Natural Oil is Best for Removing Makeup?
This is my favorite natural solution for makeup removal and it comes straight from my kitchen! I also use olive oil as my nighttime facial moisturizer, and of course, COOKING! I like that this is something I already have in stock and isn’t an additional product I need to buy.
Simply add a few drops of olive oil onto a tissue or preferred cloth and gently massage over the face and eyes. You may need more or less, depending on how much makeup you are removing.
I like using a tissue because even when the oil absorbs into it, it still glides nicely across the skin, whereas a washcloth may absorb too much of the oil for it to be used effectively.
I usually follow with my facial cleanser, (I use this one – click for link), but you can also just wipe away the excess oil with the tissue or cloth. Always use caution when using around the eyes.
Jojoba oil, pronounced “ho-ho-ba”, is very similar to the composition of our skin, so it absorbs better than many other oils.
For the purpose of makeup removal, I stick with olive oil because it does the job and is the less expensive option.
Nonetheless, jojoba oil offers excellent benefits for the skin and is a base oil I use regularly in my skin care. It’s also a great oil to use when applying essential oil, as most oils should be diluted with a carrier oil before application.
Is it Ok to Use coconut oil as a makeup remover?
Coconut oil is an incredible ingredient for so many things, but skincare is not one of them. Coconut oil can clog pores and form a film over the skin. So while it may be recommended for other uses, it’s best not to use it on the skin, especially the face.
