There’s been a recall on big brand dry shampoos over concerns of BENZENE.
Benzene is a carcinogenic ingredient that can cause developmental & reproductive toxicity, as well as having a negative impact on bone marrow.
Dry shampoos may also contain a cocktail of harmful ingredients like:
  • Benzene: carcinogen also linked to developmental & reproductive toxicity (PubChem CID: 241)
  • Fragrance/Parfum: umbrella term including hundreds of toxins, including hormone disrupting phthalates, as well as skin irritants and allergens. Chemicals that are hidden behind this term can be carcinogenic, respiratory irritants, endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxins, neurotoxins, and more (PMID: 35669814)
  • Polyquaterniums: (aka “quats”) group of polymers that may release formaldehyde and produce nitrosamines, both of which are known carcinogens (PubChem CID: 6433396)
  • Ethoxylated ingredients (PEGs, PPGs, polysorbates, ceteareth, phenoxyethanol): ethoxylation process produces ethylene oxide, a carcinogen and developmental toxin (PubChem CID: 6354) and 1,4-dioxane, a suspected carcinogen (PubChem CID: 31275)
BENZENE IS NOT AN INGREDIENT. IT IS CREATED WHEN OTHER TOXIC INGREDIENTS REACT WITH EACH OTHER. So it’s not necessarily something you can keep an eye out for without knowing the specific ingredients that lead to the existence of benzene.
These ingredients are harmful when inhaled and when topically applied to the scalp.
With safer options for dry shampoo, it’s unnecessary to expose ourselves to these toxins. Eliminate these harmful ingredients by switching to one of the following non toxic dry shampoos.
