We wash our hands dozens of times a day—and each time, whatever’s in that soap gets absorbed right into our skin (one of the reasons hand soap is one of the first non-toxic swaps I recommend making).
Unfortunately, many conventional hand soaps are loaded with questionable ingredients like synthetic fragrances, parabens, triclosan, sulfates, and artificial dyes that can disrupt hormones, irritate skin, or worse.
The good news? There are plenty of truly clean, non-toxic hand soap options that lather beautifully, smell amazing (naturally!), and leave your hands soft—not stripped.

Ingredients to Avoid in Hand Soap
Here’s a rundown of the most common red-flag ingredients in conventional hand soaps:
- Fragrance/Parfum: Often hides phthalates and other undisclosed chemicals; linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and respiratory issues.
- Parabens (e.g., methylparaben, propylparaben): Preservatives that mimic estrogen; associated with endocrine disruption and potential reproductive harm.
- Sulfates (SLS/SLES – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate): Harsh detergents that strip skin’s natural oils; can cause irritation and may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane (a carcinogen).
- Triclosan/Triclocarban: Antibacterial agents; banned in some soaps by the FDA due to hormone disruption and contribution to antibiotic resistance.
- Artificial Dyes (e.g., FD&C colors): Petroleum-derived; potential allergens and contaminants like heavy metals.
- Methylisothiazolinone (MIT/MCI): Preservatives linked to skin allergies, irritation, and neurotoxicity.
These ingredients can sneak in, even in “natural”-claimed products!
7 Mainstream Hand Soaps to Avoid (And Why)
While they’re everywhere, these popular brands often contain ingredients linked to health concerns:
- Method – Contains synthetic fragrance and preservatives like methylisothiazolinone.
- Mrs. Meyer’s – Heavy on “fragrance” (which can hide phthalates) and SLS.
- Softsoap – Artificial colors, parabens, and triclosan in some formulas.
- Dial – Often includes triclosan/triclocarban (antibacterial agents banned in some places).
- Bath & Body Works – Loaded with synthetic fragrances, parabens, and dyes.
- J.R. Watkins – Some versions have SLS and artificial scents.
- Everyone (EO Products) – While better than most, still uses phenoxyethanol and fragrance blends.

DIY Hand Soap
Save money try this DIY Hand Soap recipe:
- 1-2 oz Castile soap
- Distilled water (boiled and cooled also works)
- 10-15 drops essential oil (our favorites are lavender or lemon)
- ½ oz of Vitamin E or jojoba oil
- 16 oz foaming soap dispenser (glass is preferred)
Combine all ingredients into the soap dispenser. Adjust as preferred.
