Non Toxic Mascara Swaps + 8 Popular Brands to Avoid

Conventional mascaras often rely on preservatives that can disrupt hormones, pigments with questionable safety data, and film-formers that help the formula last through humidity or tears but come with their own concerns. Many also contain undisclosed fragrance, formaldehyde-releasers, or (in waterproof versions) persistent chemicals that don’t break down easily. When you wear mascara most days, that low-level, repeated exposure adds up – especially around the thin skin and mucous membranes of the eyes.

Cleaner mascaras have come a long way. You no longer have to choose between performance and better ingredients.

Ingredients to Avoid in Mascara

  • Ethoxylated ingredients (PEGs, PPGs, polysorbates, ceteareth, phenoxyethanol): ethoxylation process produces ethylene oxide, (carcinogen and developmental toxin) and 1,4-dioxane (a suspected carcinogen).
  • Phenoxyethanol: deemed generally safe at a 1% concentration, however it’s production process, ethoxylation, can potentially contaminate phenoxyethanol with 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide (see above for ethoxylated ingredient description)
  • Parabens: preservatives linked to endocrine disruption, known to be carcinogenic due to endocrine disruption. Parabens may be listed as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, and benzylparaben.
  • Phthalates (often hidden in “fragrance”): Endocrine disruptors that can affect reproductive health and development. Many brow products use synthetic fragrance or masking agents.
  • Fragrance/Parfum: umbrella term including hundreds of toxins, including hormone disrupting phthalates, as well as skin irritants and allergens. Chemicals that are hidden behind this term can be carcinogenic, respiratory irritants, endocrine disruptors, reproductive toxins, neurotoxins, and more.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15): These slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen and common allergen that can irritate eyes and skin.
  • Carbon black / D&C Black No. 2 / CI 77266: A common black pigment. Some forms raise concerns around potential carcinogenicity and impurities; cleaner brands usually stick to iron oxides instead.
  • BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA: Antioxidants that help stabilize formulas. They’re suspected endocrine disruptors and have been flagged for other organ toxicity concerns.
  • PFAS (“forever chemicals”): Often associated with waterproof or long-wear claims. These persistent compounds have been detected in many waterproof mascaras and are linked to a range of health concerns.
  • Retinyl acetate: Occasionally added for conditioning; the FDA classifies it as a known reproductive toxicant and it scores high on hazard scales.

Popular Mascara Brands to Avoid

Daily exposure adds up. Here are some popular brands with common red flags:

  • Maybelline (many Colossal, Lash Sensational, and Total Temptation versions): frequently contain parabens, BHT, or synthetic polymers and fragrance.
  • CoverGirl (LashBlast and similar drugstore staples): often include parabens, triethanolamine, or other preservatives of concern.
  • L’Oréal (Voluminous and many waterproof options): common sources of parabens, BHT, and petroleum-derived ingredients in popular tubes.
  • Lancôme (Hypnôse and some high-end lines): have included methylparaben and propylparaben in certain formulas.
  • Tarte (some Shape Tape or classic mascaras): certain versions have raised PFAS flags in independent testing.
  • Burt’s Bees, Honest Beauty, and several “natural” drugstore options: some tested positive for fluorine indicators consistent with PFAS in past analyses (always check the latest formula).
  • MAC Extreme Dimension and certain Artdeco waterproofs: have shown formaldehyde-releasing concerns in European testing.
